MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – Four people were injured Thursday morning in a rollover
crash on Interstate 5 near Mount Vernon, including a 3-month-old baby boy that
suffered serious head injuries when he was ejected from the vehicle.
The
crash happened shortly after 11 a.m. Thursday just north of the Kincaid Street
exit, the Washington State Patrol said. All northbound lanes of Interstate 5
were blocked for about an hour after the accident.
Trooper Keith Leary
says a Honda Pilot SUV was heading north on I-5 when it slammed into a concrete
barrier on the left side of the roadway and rolled over.
The 3-month-old
baby and the baby’s car seat were ejected in the crash, Leary said. He said the
baby boy somehow became separated from the car seat as he was thrown from the
SUV and was found lying on the ground in a separate location.
“Something
we’ll be looking at is … whether the child and the car seat were properly
secured,” Leary said. “This definitely should not have happened, and we are
looking at … why both of those came out of the car.”
The SUV was being
driven by the baby boy’s mother, a 27-year-old woman from Surrey, British
Columbia. Also in the vehicle were the woman’s two daughters, aged 6 and
7.
The woman and her three children were rushed to Skagit Valley
Hospital.
At first the baby’s injuries did not appear to be severe, but
closer examination found that the child sustained serious injuries to the head.
The baby was then airlifted to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle for
treatment.
The driver sustained arm and head injuries. The two girls,
who were wearing seatbelts, received minor injuries.
The driver later
told state troopers she was startled after driving over the rumble strip. She
attempted to correct back into her lane when she lost control, crashed into the
barrier on the left side of the freeway and rolled over.
Drugs and
alcohol are not a factor in the crash, Leary said.
Troopers were able to
open up the shoulder to allow traffic to pass just after noon, but the backup
was extensive.
